Hello KCBS BBQ Team!
Thanks for your interest in participating in our “Almost Heaven BBQ Bash” the weekend of June 16-17, 2017 and we look forward to welcoming you to a great new location – the grounds of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, WV. Featuring acres of level space with paved parking, grassy areas with shade trees, NO wait for load-in, a secure gated area in downtown Weston (approx. 15 min. from our previous location & only 6 minutes from I-79), there’s plenty of room for more teams, more activities, and more fun.
We’re proud to be the only KCBS Sanctioned BBQ Competition in the state, again making this the WV State BBQ Championship — earning the WV Grand Champion an automatic entry to the Jack Daniels Invitational BBQ Tournament —no need to hold your breath for your name to be called in a random drawing – you’re IN if you WIN in WV! Our event also serves as the WV Cup for MABA (Mid Atlantic BBQ Association), a qualifying event for the American Royal, and the Sonny’s BBQ Invitational in Florida.
Although we’re planning several other family activities to attract people to the event —it’s about BBQ and YOU! We’ll also be holding a Sunny Buck Backyard BBQ Contest for the non-pro BBQ teams, but YOU are the stars of this event! We’re pleased to have Rusty & Julie Cook of Stone Mountain, GA, returning as our KCBS reps, along with Tom Morris as our Judge Coordinator, who works hard to assemble a cross-section of 100% KCBS certified judges. All have been working hard to make Almost Heaven BBQ Bash one of the best competitions, esp. with our exciting new location.
Desserts: Desserts will be judged following KCBS criteria. Desserts do not have to be prepared on-site, but obviously cannot be “store bought”. Standard KCBS containers will be provided, but you may use your own container provided your team number is placed visibly on your container, which you may pick up at the turn-in / judging location after the final judging. Garnishes, of your choice, are optional. Teams provide a minimum of 6 portions for judging, however, they do not have to be pre-cut at turn-in, (a whole pie or cake is acceptable, and will be cut into judging portions after judging for appearance).
KCBS BBQ Competition Awards: Unique, custom-made trophies awarded with 1st – 5th place, along with cash awards.
WV BBQ Grand Champion $2,500
WV BBQ Reserve Grand Champion $1,500
1st Place $500 (for each of 4 meat categories)
2nd Place $400 ”
3rd Place $300 ”
4th Place $200 ”
5th Place $100 ”
Cook Sites: We’re excited to have a new location so all teams are in close proximity with level, paved parking areas and acres of lawn and shade trees, all within a 2-3 minute walk from the Judging area. Team sites will be assigned based on order received as well as your space/electrical requirements. (Event will be located on the front lawn area – photos at www.trans-alleghenylunaticasylum.com or their Facebook page – an amazing location).
Electric: All spots will have basic electric (15 AMP) service, with a very limited number of 50 AMP spots. Spaces, with specific electrical needs, will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to returning teams. The sooner we receive your entry form, the better chance we have to provide the ideal spot to meet all your needs.
Water/Ice: Water will be available for each spot, sanitary facilities will be located in the team cooking area, and ice will be available, and delivered to your site, for a nominal charge. We can also make arrangements for a “private” porta-john for your team site this year if you wish for an additional fee – please contact me if you wish to reserve a private porta-john at your site.
Gray Water / Grease / Ash & Trash: Designated containers for disposal of these will be conveniently located in the cook team areas, and must be used to dispose of these types of waste. PLEASE make sure to dispose of these items in the proper containers.
KCBS Team / Cook’s Schedule
Arrival/Set-Up: Our new location is reserved for “you” from Thursday thru Saturday evening, so no waiting for offices to close and cars to be moved so you can park and set up – another positive reason for this new location. Please let us know in advance of your “projected” arrival time so we can plan properly.
Meat Inspection: Begins at 9:00 AM Friday, June 16th and continues until all teams have been checked and approved.
Cook’s Meeting: 4:00 PM Friday, June 16th – Lewis Co. EMS Building – approx. 3-4 min. walk from all cook sites
Judging / Turn-In Times:
Saturday, June 17, 2016
12:00 PM Chicken
12:30 PM Ribs
1:00 PM Pork
1:30 PM Brisket
2:30 PM Desserts * turn-in time may vary, depending on number of participating backyard teams – will confirm prior to event
Awards Ceremony: approx. 5:00 PM – location to be announced, but near all cook sites
People’s Choice Contest: Although not required, we hope you will participate in our People’s Choice Contest as there are no BBQ specialty restaurants in our town, and attendees are anxious to taste some serious BBQ! We will provide 1-2 pork butts per team (depending on the number of teams participating), then pick those up Saturday morning approx. 10-10:30 AM. Our volunteers will prepare and label samples for the public to taste and judge … money and awards are on the line!
Selling Your BBQ: The local Health Dept. has been very cooperative due to KCBS’s stringent sanitary and other requirements, and allowing KCBS competitors to vend during the event. If you wish to do so, please contact me directly for more information. You’ll need to complete our vendor application, a Health Dept. application (which we’ll obtain for you in advance), and pay the appropriate fees. Only competing KCBS teams will be permitted to vend BBQ food products during our event to maintain fairness and a high quality of product to the public.
Misc.: This NEW event site is located in the downtown area near restaurants and shopping, a convenient Shop N Save (grocery) across the street, 3 hotels/motels offering discounted BBQ Team rates within a 6 min drive (beside I-79 with 6 nearby restaurants). Lodging information will be available on our website, and we’ll gladly assist you in any way to make your stay as convenient and comfortable as possible.
NEW SITE INFO: The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is the oldest hand-cut stone structure in the United States, built in the mid 1800’s with a long and interesting history. The front lawn & paved areas are situated on 20 beautifully landscaped acres with room to expand the event providing easy access for teams (NO waiting for cars to be moved prior to load-in), plenty of free parking, and space for vendors, crafters, and lots of family activities. Check out their website at www.trans-alleghenylunaticasylum.com and Facebook page for more information and photos. We’ll provide more details closer to the event … discounts for BBQ teams and their families and judges for a variety of historical tours, etc.. The WV Mountaineer Military Museum is also a short walk from the site providing a glimpse into our state’s military history for our many BBQ veterans, as well as 2 glass museums and other unique shops and restaurants.
